At 51, I started an unexpected and fascinating journey: teaching Spanish and other subjects I never imagined teaching before—like math and science—in a new country. After finishing my PhD, I told myself I didn’t want to face any more big challenges, but here I am, reinventing myself and trying to find my place in a different educational and cultural context.
Originally from Chile, I have many years of experience teaching English. I earned my Master’s degree from San Francisco State University in the United States and my PhD from the University of Calgary in Canada. My research interests include second, foreign, and heritage language acquisition, language ideologies, and teachers’ beliefs and identities.
People can talk to me about language learning, teaching across cultures, teacher identity, or the joys and challenges of starting over professionally in a new country.
